Raymond Domenech is set to be rewarded for leading France to the World Cup final by being offered a new contract to continue as coach.
His current deal expires at the end of July but the president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Jean-Pierre Escalettes, has hinted he wants Domenech to stay on. The matter will be discussed at an FFF board meeting on Tuesday.
Escalettes said: "For me Raymond Domenech has not done a bad World Cup, he has actually done very well. I have always backed him up and if the other members of the board think the same, then we will make the right decision."
Zinedine Zidane handed France an early lead in the final before Marco Materazzi hauled the sides level but the game was overshadowed when Zidane was sent-off in extra time for head-butting former Everton defender Materazzi.
Escalettes admitted he was at a loss to explain Zidane's actions but is adamant his 110th-minute dismissal had no bearing on the final outcome.
He added: "I have no explanation but his gesture had no influence on the final result. I don't want to judge him nor blame him.
"He must be very sad and unhappy. Let's not shoot the artist." |
