Everton utility man Phil Neville is determined to make a return to international football when new England boss Steve McClaren takes charge of the national team.
Neville, 29, earned the last of his 52 caps a year ago but was part of the England squad prior to the 23-man squad being named for the World Cup.
"There is a clean slate with the new regime and we have got to look forward," he said. "I am no different and I desperately want to continue playing for England."
He continued: "Just being called back for the three weeks I had in the summer gave me a taste and kept me involved.
"There is a game on August 18 and a European qualifier on September 2 so everyone wants to be in Steve McClaren's first squad and I am no different."
Neville came on as a substitute in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Portugal in the quarter-final of Euro 2004, with England losing at the same stage and in the same manner at this summer's World Cup.
"In the last four or five major championships we have gone out on penalties and we will have to put that right," added Neville on official Everton website www.evertonfc.com.
"Penalties are the worst possible way for a player to end the game. I was next up for a penalty at Euro 2004 against Portugal and it was one of the most nerve-wracking moments of my career.
"We have been unlucky the last two times because we have come up against a goalkeeper who is great at saving penalties. But I don't think there is anything more to it than that." |
