We consider some of the hotheads who may land themselves in trouble at this summer’s tournament.
Antonio Cassano
The unpredictable Italian is similar to Wayne Rooney in style of play and character. An outrageously-talented forward, the Real Madrid player is equally short-tempered as Rooney on the pitch and much more of a nuisance off it.
Wayne Rooney
Despite lurid tabloid tales, Rooney has never caused any of his bosses a problem off the pitch but has been forced to curb his over-aggressive style on it. He loses his temper too easily and dissent has been a major problem in his career so far, as referee Graham Poll, the victim of a lengthy four-letter tirade, would admit.
Jens Lehmann
Germany goalkeeper Lehmann appears in control and passive 99% of the time but is prone to moments of madness. Such incidents usually see the Arsenal stopper flapping at crosses and complaining about challenges by attackers before pushing them to the floor.
Marco Materazzi
Former Everton defender Materazzi appears intent on inheriting Paolo Montero's mantle as the 'animal' of Serie A. Guilty of countless dangerous tackles, the Italy defender is never shy when it comes to a bit of 'handbags' either.
Gennaro Gattuso
Uncompromising Azzurri midfielder who won the hearts of Rangers fans during his time in Glasgow for his enthusiastic, biting playing style. More reckless and over-zealous than dirty.
David Albelda
Short-fused Valencia and Spain midfielder who provokes and reacts in equal measure. Hard-tackling - not always fairly - Albelda likes to set an aggressive tempo to matches.
Lucas Neill
The ill-disciplined Australia full-back is not a regular offender but has a habit of making crunching tackles, some of which could be described as reckless. They usually spark group-mayhem and a flurry of cards.. occasionally red.
Carlos Tevez
Stocky Argentinian firebrand Tevez has had to fight hard to survive, playing in the hostile surroundings of the Brazilian league for Corinthians. The forward has a bite to his game and is happy to dish it out to defenders, from whom, it must be said, he often takes it too.
